הבעש"ט היה לומד עם תלמידיו שיעור בגמרא. אופן הלימוד היה מתוך חריפות וגאונות גדולה. הבעש"ט היה מתרגם את המילים לאידיש. כשלמדו מסכת ערכין והגיעו למארז"ל (טו, ב): "לשון תליתאי קטיל תליתאי", פירש הבעש"ט: "לשון הרע קוטל כל השלושה: הממציא, המספר והמאזין; אך זהו בלבושים הרוחניים, שזה קשה יותר מרציחה בגשמיות"!
