אאמו"ר [הרש"ב] אמר: קריאת שמע שעל המטה היא, בזעיר אנפין [=בצורה מזערית], כהווידוי שבטרם צאת הנפש מהגוף. אלא שאז עוזבים לגמרי את היריד, תם המסחר של "היום לעשותם", ובקריאת שמע שעל המטה שבכל לילה עדיין נמצאים באמצע היריד, ועוד אפשר לפעול.
